hey doug ,,the md 80 marlin was made between 1935-1959 and on this one it's a call shot on refinishing ,,yes there are marlin collectors out there that might pay a preimium for an original rifle but we are talking a rifle in mint condition that might bring 150-200 at best,, and thats mint original..so if it was mine refinishing this one would only help the value if your planning on reselling it down the road ,,because value is going to be more as a shooter than a rare collectors item,,just an honest opinion for ya buddy..

Thanks bigcurt what do you think about giving it a flat black finish it has a couple of bad rust spots on the barrel I don't think I can get the stain out.

hey doug.. sounds like a good candidate for my special sand blast instant stainless look,, may look pretty good silver or silver matt,,hey if ya don't like the way it comes out ,,then it would be a nice clean metal for making mat black..we used to use regular play sand for blasting parts and i've blasted many of my own and just either left them matt or took them over to the bench grinder and wire brushed them to give them the nickel look,,and i really like the nickel look ..this sounds like a good project rifle and ya might like the results ,,usually doesn't take more than an hour from start to finish,,the bolt is proably chromed so it wouldn't have to be done and on a 22 bolt theres not alot of small peices to clean up ,,usually i just take a blow gun afterwards and blow everything out real good ..the mag is about the only real part that will need a good cleanning because the sand will get in there and make the follower stickey ,,then you'll have to get the sand outa the small crevuices and coat everything with wd 40 or equilivant spray oil and your done ,,unless you leave it in a bucket of water the oil will protect the metal and it won't rust,,and then occasionally just wipe it down with some light oil and the finish will stay great looking for along time ,,alot of people think that bare metal will rust faster than a blued finish but blueing has salts involved and if ya live where they use salts in the winter like here in PA ,,you know what salt will do to metal..lol..lol..give it a try at least you will get rid of the rust spots ..lol..but it can be addicting because they really change the look of the standard blued rifle and give them a more all weather look..

Thats not a bad idea. I know a person who does sand blasting maybe I could get it done free or at a reduced price. I might try that. Thanks for the idea....Doug
