I have a model 1898, U S
sringfield Armory rifle, serial no. 278919. the overall length is 49 1/4 in long, with a steel butt plate. The stock is 30 1/2 in long, barrell length is 30 1/2 un lg. on the metal band that holds the stock to the barrell, left side, there is a letter U and on the right side of the barrell is the letter P. shells are loaded into a flip out holder on the right side. rear sight is a flip up,down with adusjtment from 2-20. can you help with any information.

hello ,,sounds like a krag rifle to me ,,thanjks for the exact description,,this is the kind of description that i enjoy replying to!!

,,,your springfield model 1898 krag sounds correct an all original down to the markings on the bands ,,this is the condition military collectors look for for there collections ,,Military rifles are good movers and it's surprizing how many military collectors are out there these days ,,in VG condition i can see this bringing 1000-1200 and quite possibly more to the right collector or military arms auction,,I seldom see krags in this condition selling for less than 1000 at shows these days and an original unaltered krag will sell!
