Hi , Hoping someone can help me out.I just aquired a very nice bolt action sporter in 95% condition. It has "Johnson Automatics .270" stamped on the top of the barrel. It has has a very nice classic style stock, nicely checkered steel butt stock, no checkering on the stock and a rather bizzare looking muzzel brake, wood to metal fit is very nice. So what the heck is it?

hello ,,johnson made barrels and i've seen a few on vintage springfeild bolt action custom rifles built post ww2,,is it a springfield action or mauser action,,or enfield action it's built on? sounds like a rifle built by or for someone with custom features ,,some of these sporters will bring good money depending who built them and the quality of the job,,so as for value it would depend on how nice it is ,,where your located and the market as well as condition..proably in the 400-600+ range depending on the condition and the craftsmanship put into it..possibly more if a well known gunsmith built it or at auction or to a vintage custom rifle collector,,some of the old gunsmiths built some really nice rifles and it sounds like your is a classic example of that!

Hello, I just read your post while I was looking for info on the rifle I ran across. It sounds alot like yours, johnson automatic .270 stamped on the barrel. It looks like the bolt action was hand fitted to the stock. not very good craftmanship. It also has mod 98 stamped on the side. I was just curious if you had found out any more info about your rifle. I dont think mine would fall into the price range mentioned. Thanks

I will try to post a picture. Mine was actually sent to Johnson and comes from his shop. It is a Mauser 98 action really good wood to metal fit and since I like to use guns I own shoots about a 1&1/4 inch group w remington facory 130 grain siroccos. I have not been able to really get it's value nailed but if it is only $400-600 I figure to use it.
