hello,,your rifle sounds like a German made K-98 Mauser rifle The DOT is the arsenal code for waffenfabric brunn ag bruno or bystrica,,should be a number under the dot code ,,thats the production year,,the eagles are proofs used by the germans ,,you will proably see small eagle like proofs with numbers on the site and small metal parts ,,bands may have the last 3 digits of the serial number also ,,the triggerguard will proably have the dot stamp ,,is it duffel cut under the middle band ?alot of vets used to cut the stock under the middle barrel band so they could hide it in there duffle bag when they brought them home,,hopefully it was never sporterized or another stock use to replace the original laminate stock!!,,if it has the original stock check the aera on the right side behind where the sling goes thru the stock and you should see german proofs there also and proably some number proofs ,,also under the pistol grip near the rear tang where the screw goes thru ..if you look in the right light there should be proofs there also,,these proofs and numbers are what a collector will look for on original guns and increase the value when clear and crisp,,your bolt should have the last 3 digits of the serial number on the small parts ,,an all matching vet bringback original k-98 will demand 500-1000+ on the collector market ,,depending how correct and untouched it is ,,the duffel cut will not detract from the value to a true collector because it is usually a good indicator of a vet bring back rifle,,did he tell you where he picked it up ,,at what battle? if so document it for future refrences and keep it in a safe place and keep it oiled down to prevent rusting ,,because the original german battlefeild pickups are always on the rise and someday you'll be glad you kept it original and clean,,do ya have any pics to share with us?
