As near as I can tell from incomplete TV news coverage, trusted citizens were permitted or encouraged to own guns. These would be Baathist party members and those from Saddam's own ethnic group. Therefore, if you were Joe Shia who lived in Basra and tried carrying an AK around, you life wouldn't be worth a dime. - CW

Just like the Soviet Union, and in the future, the USA, where there are different levels of citizenship, if you are the local Democratic Party Chair, or if you work for the gov't you can be trusted, and you will get a CCW, while Joe Six_pack cannot, the same in Iraq. Tell the US government you will not pay your taxes, and see taught the Iraqis how to be oppressive.

Iraq had one of the highest persentages of gun ownership by citizenry in the world. There were around 50 gun shops in Baghdad alone.. where anyone could walk in off the street and purchase a firearm.

The didn't need a Second Amendment.

Now *that* surprises *me*. I find rec.guns to be 'fair and balanced'. Any time one of our Marxists gets too outrageous we're allowed to stick a few pins in to let the hot air out.We just have to play 'nice' and keep it out of the gutter. Bill Van Houten (USA Ret)
