I inherited a remington rifle. Not sure what caliber. It's a single shot centerfire with an octagon barrel. The serial number is H42173. I think it was manufactured around early 1880's. Some rust with minimal pitting. Any help in determining caliber, date of manufacturing, and value would be greatly appreciated

Eric, with only a serial number will be very hard to discover the answers to the questions you are asking. My personal suggestion is to contact Remmington directly because I am sure they are having archives on whatever was produced whenever.
