I own a rifle of somewhat unknown origin. It is chambered for .270 Winchester on a 98 Mauserr action with a Lyman Alaskan 2.5X scope on a sporting stock. The only markings on this rifle are the "98 Mauser" and a small swastica the size of a pencil eraser on the left side of the action near the front scope mount. No serial number, no maker.

The gun has probably 75% blueing and the wood stock in is good condition. The scope is functional and accurate. I know this because I still use it to hunt elk with. It is quite possibly the most accurate gun I own.

Can you give me any history on the rifle. And if so, what might something like this be worth. Is it collectable?

Thanks

hello,,after ww2 many ww2 mauser model 98's were converted by gunsmiths to popular sporting calibers ,,this was usually done buy removing the original mauser 8mm barrel and replaceing it with custom barrels ,,the stocks were usually discarded and in place of them a sporter stock was installed ,,low scope safteys were usually installed and sometimes the old straight bolt was bent to alow the mounting of a scope ,,your rifle sounds like a prime example of this practice and as for a value ..i see nice sporters of this type in the 450-600 range and sometimes even more when a known gunsmith does the work ,,some of the quality on these is excellent and some are so-so,,they will usually shoot good and it sounds like yours is no exception of these facts

..the days of custom built rifles are slowly fadeing ,,and most hunters today go to your local sporting goods store and buy a in the box plastic stocked basic model hunting rifle for around 350-450 and there happy as hell,,but these outa the box deer rifles will never surpass the craftsmanship and hand fitting and finishing of the old school gunsmiths in my opinion!
