I just aquired a 1849 springfield rifle. The only markings I can find only say SPRING
FIELD
1849
on the sideplate just behind the hammer. The barrell is smoothbore. The gun is not in working condition, has some pitting on the barrel. The forearm has a crack in the wood, but for it's age is in pretty good shape. It also came with a wood handle metal cleaning rod.Any info on history and aprox. value would be great
