I have just purchased a mauser 1910 in 25ACP and a Hi Standard Duramatic M-101 in 22 Long Rifle. The Mauser was $ 150.00 and the Duramatic was $115.00. They were both your typical pawn shop wonders so i thick they will be good for the price even though i have only fired them into a pond bank so far just to make sure that they did function reliably. i do reload for the 25 ACP and i am hoping that maybe the Mauser will be more accurate than my FIE Titan. Could you still get extra magazines for either of these? The woman at the pawnshop ask me if i had ever owned the Hi Standard before and i said no. Is it a sign of mental illness because she asked me that question? This will only make a total of twelve handguns in my collection. Is that too many? I keep wanting to purchase a 9mm and a 45.

Dear Jeffrey:
You have two good guns there. The Mauser 1910 25 ACP is one of the best 25's ever made. It is in a totally different class than the FIE Titan. The High Standard Dura-Matic is a fine 22, light, accurate and reliable.
IMHO used quality guns in good condition are always a better buy than new junk guns, and I have found many good buys at pawnshops.
As for spare magazines, original ones are hard to find and expensive, but do not succumb to the temptation to get after market magazines. They are ALL junk. Check gun shows and spare parts dealers until you find originals in good condition. Get a copy of Shotgun News, check the Magazines and Clips section, and start making phone calls. Sooner or later you will get lucky.
FYI I have more than 100 handguns in my collection and there are many more I want to get. Fine as it is, you do not want to depend on the Mauser for self-protection, since the 25 ACP is a very poor stopper, so if you can pack legally you may need at least one more gun.
Regards,

Do a Google search for magazines, but others could probably answer better than I could.
If you are into classic weapons, then 9mm Browning Hi Power, a Luger, and a 1911 Colt or clone in .45ACP come to mind.
Buy 'em all! 12 guns is *NOT* a lot, believe me.
A few revolvers might not be a bad idea also. Something in .38 SPL, .357 Magnum. A Colt Detective Special, perhaps??

I keep wanting to purchase a 9mm and a 45. # Magazines are probably available from Gun Parts, may not be originals. There's some other sources out there for after-market ones. I hesitate to recommend Tom Forrest, but he's been in business for a long time and has a long list of magazines in his Shotgun News ads. Another source is gun shows, if you have any. There's always at least two vendors around here that have cases full of miscellaneous mags.
I'm not sure that accuracy is really needed with a .25 ACP, it's a last ditch weapon for arm's length ranges. I reload for .25, too, I mostly go for reliable functioning. If the barrel is still good on the Mauser, I think you got a good deal. If you strip it, be careful of the grip, it's one piece of wood, cracks easily and can't be replaced. Certainly a much higher class of gun than a Titan.
The Duramatic was the low end of the line, for tackle box carry and the like. Many were made up for Sears under their own label. If it works for you and is reliable, keep it. Just don't expect match accuracy. There's not much collector's interest in them unless they're almost N.I.B. condition. You may have to tweak any magazines you buy for functioning, a fairly common occurance with High Standards.
