I have inspected a Winchester 94 rifle that has serial number in the 233XXX range. The barrel is a half round, octagon barrel 24 inches long, with a buck horn rear sight. The chambering is 30 WCF. Ths finish is quite worn, with no factory bluing remaining, the wood is in good condition, the gun is tight and in excellent working condition. What would be a value range for this rifle?

The half round / half octagon barrel was a special order feature for the Model 1894. Is the magazine full length or is it a few inches longer than the fore end of does it end right at the end of the fore end? These were all options also. Does the rifle have a pistol grip stock or straight? Is the wood checkered? Is it a cresent butt stock or does it look more like a shotgun butt? Often times the original purchaser of the rifle ordered more than one special feature on the rifle and they all can slightly affect the value. BUT, condition is still the over riding control unless the features are extremely rare. Way back when these rifles were being made you could pick and choose just what you wanted on the rifle. From the sights, to the type of trigger, to the finish, to engraving, stock style, barrel style etc. A look at the old catalogs shows some of these differences might only cost one to 3 dollars difference. But 3 dollars 108 years ago was a big thing.

Joe,

The crescent shape butt was standard. Shotgun butts were optional and I personally think they look funky.
As I say for my own collecting "Shotgun butts need not apply". While the half octagon barrel was special order, without some other rare options I would agree with Curt that your rifle is in the $1000 ballpark.

Good luck
