I have an 1886 Winchester, Indian rifle, oct. barrel, brass tacks on stock.
.38 56 caliber, can I use .38 55 cartriges.

The 38-55 is anecked brass cartridge. Iam not that familiar with the 39-56 but if it it straght brass the answer is no. I can check but you might Googling the 38-56 and look at the specs.

Let me clarify my previousr post. I was riding in a van and typing on my iPhone while coming home from a deer hunting trip. Also working from memory - always scary. The .38-56 is a necked cartridge. See the link. http://www.loaddata.com/members/search_printable.cfm? metallicid=2691&MW=&PM=&PT=

The .38-55 is a straight brass cartridge. As a result they ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE!
