Guest,

Your rifle dates to 1973. I was graduating from high school! The post 64 Winchesters are not valued as high as those made before 1964. At least you told me it is in excellent condition. That is a help. You're probably looking at $450 to maybe $550 if you have patience to sell it.

This post might interest you. http://www.gunvaluesboard.com/why-i-need-photos- 254864.html#25490

Thanks

The scroll "engraving" might add a bit if it is special edition. Send a photo and we can check.

Take your time. There is no rush. I am going hunting for the weekend so will not be back till Tuesday. I am sure you will have it figured out by then. Best bet... find some little kid to help you! That is why my daughter is still at home.

The fact that it has a saddle ring is interesting. It may be a limited edition. Looking forward to the photos. The photo below is a hundred year old Saddle Ring Carbine.

I also have a Model 94 manufactured in 73 with the scroll and the saddle ring. It also has a brass loading trap door (it that what it is called). I found a photo pretty much like mine but in a little better condition. I am interested in what the rifle is worth if only for insurance.
Unfortunately a previous owner engraved his name, the year (1973) and something else maybe a nickname right below the serial number. Not likely to improve the value.

I found a better photo of the scroll work, exactly like mine. Ralph, does this look like yours?

Jim,

That finish in the receiver is called Antiqued case color. Not to be confused with real case coloring which is beautiful. It's not a trap door but rather a loading gate. On these rifles it may actually be gold plated. But I would have to dig deeper to be sure.

These modern rifles finished in this manner do list for slightly higher values than a generic Model 94 without the ring and with blued receivers. I have seen them for $650 to $750 if the stock is checkered as in the photo.

Jim, you are correct about the name engraving on yours. Unless that person ended up being famous it hurts the value. And you would have to prove the rifle was his. Not just some old rifle with his name on it.

Ralph and Jim,

I do not want to belittle the late Winchester trademark rifles but I will admit prejudice toward them. Here are some photos to compare with plus hundred year old guns. Enjoy.

This is case coloring in a Model 1886 made in 1892. As you can see it is VERY different. Also, note how perfectly the wood fits to the receiver compared to the modern rifle. In addition, look at the sharp edges of the metal on the receiver of the 1886 versus the rounded "edges" on the modern gun.

Here is another example.
Notice the wood fit and the perfect checkering.

And finally, two examples of hand done engraving from the 1880s on a Model 1873. The case colors have worn off on this rifle but it is a work of art to my eyes. The engraving was $5 to $7.50 extra!!! But on this rifle with it's fancy stock, case coloring and special order barrel, half round, it all doubled the price of the rifle to the +$50 range. Now days it's a $30,000 rifle! Gulp

Here are some photos of my 94 taken today. Would it be possible to get a general idea of its value from these. The action is clean as is the bore.

JimCar,

Man I am sorry for the long delay. You got burried under the avalanche of questions. There have been 1,600 in the past 10 days!

Your rifle is a "Model 94 Antique CArbine". But obviously not a real pre 1898 antique. In its condition which is very nice it is worth right around $450.

Again I apologize.

Not to worry, and thanks for the info. One more thing, how bad does the amature engraving of the first owners name dent that price? It is right under the serial number.

JimCar,

Since these newer rifles are not in the classic collectors game where something like the name might be a 50% deduct from value. You might bet to sell it with just a ten to twenty markdown. You have a good looking rifle that some one else may be able to overlook the name for a "deal".

That is how I would approach it.

Good luck
