I have a Marlin model 62-30 carbine lever action rifle with a very short throw. It has a micro groove barrel with the number AC 8642 on the receiver. I was told by a collector that he had never seen one with a short throw lever action before and thought I was crazy for using it. I purchased it in the late 60's and used it commercially for butchering beef. I call it my million dollar gun because over the 40 years that it has been used 35-40 thousand times. This has been a fantastic rifle through the years. Can anyone tell me a history of this gun and the possible worth?

AC means 1967.
ALL model 62's are short throw actions...
That's why they were chambered in the likes of 357 mag's, 22 Remington Jet, and 30 carbine (not originally though)
In excellent condition it's a collector (it was discontinued in 73) but I suspect yours is just a wonderful rifle but probably well worn with little to none in the way of rifling even left Other then marginal I wouldn't know how to price it but $100 bucks ...

I'm frequently asked about values for numerous reasons in many different directions many times from old timers for whatever reason (not implying your an old timer, if that's a bad thing) but they ask, "What should I do with it?" Just put it in the hands of a young kid who appreciates it, some day it'll be his fondest memory.

History other then these developed out of the 56 (22 rimfire) the first of the short throws into the centerfire with the 62 (in 1962 of course) and were discontinued in 1973 due to them being "unpopular"

I also have a Marlin .30 Carbine, Im not sure what the year s or anything, but it was my first rifle; my grandfather said I always looked at it when I was a baby, so he gave it to me. For Graduation he gave me a Ruger Newmodel Black Hawk, chambered in .30 carbine. Its fun to show people that my rifle and revolver shoot the same bullet.

ALSO, I saw one for sale, it was in almost new condition, with a scope mounted, I think the guy said that it was even a Marlin scope, but Im not sure if Marlin dealt with optics, none the less, he was askin $999. Which would put a well used gun at that $100 range, as stated above.

I also, have a Marlin 62 and I love the short throw lever. I purchased this little sweetie from a co-worker in the late seventies for a song and have had it in the closet most of it's life. I haven't shot it much and would like a value that covers the entire spectrum, from mint to the one mentioned that would be a good first gun. I have to admit I agree it would be a wonderful first gun.
I don't plan to sell it, it's just fun to get an idea of the value. By the way...this is one of the first 4000 that doesn't have a serial number...I have just recently read about this fact.
Thanks

Bumpa
