I dont know a lot about guns so I'm going to try and do my best to describe this. I came across what I believe is an old cap and ball gun barrel. I found it in Arizona just sticking up out of the ground It weighs approx. 10 pounds and is around 36 inches long. It has the letters WIN 1 70 on it, or at least that what they appear to be. It is not a round barrel is like a shaped liked a stop sign on the inside and outside of the barrel. It looks very very old. Can anyone maybe lead me in the right direction to figure out what kind of barrel this is, who it was made by. Any information would really be appreciated. Thanks ... more ยป

It's a Winchester. Post as many pics (check the blogs for info on getting good pics) and one of the Winchester gurus will be able to help you out.

Other than intersting-story value, it's likely not worth much in the condition you describe.

Guest,

That is called an octagon barrel and many old Winchester rifles had barrels of that shape. There are small differnces on the rifles from one model to another so it isn't real simple for some one not familiar with them to tell them apart. You might read these posts and see if they help you out some. But photos will be the best way to figure it out without playing 50 questions.

I look forward to helping you on this mystery rifle.
