Hey does anyone have some pictures of guns to give an idea of value? How do you judge if it is 20% or 80 % Im sure there is some pictures around. Any ways I have a Pre-war Colt 38 Super most likely 1st year production. Its definatly seen better days, the blueing is gone and I have no idea if it has the original grips.
hello,,i'm sure ya can do a search on NRA grading firearms and ya should be able to bring some pics up..and descriptions of how to grade firearms..most good value guides will detail grading and most these days include pics of different grades ,,original finish is better than refinished because most collectors would rather have a used looking example then a new looking example thats been refinished ,,the problem with refinishing guns is that most people don't spend the time or the money for a professional refinishing job,,and good gunsmiths are a dying breed and is a somewhat lost art,,guns today are cheaper to produce because of plastics and don't require alot of maintanance or upkeep so refinishing isn;t as common as it used to be ,,some guns are good canditates for professional refinishing but once it's done it's done and if it's a shoddy job then the value of it in original condition just went out the door..ya gotta remember that there are factors involved with every gun ,,like how old it is,,what the original finish looked like and most people don't expect a 50-100 year old gun to look new..military guns were used and abused in battle and when battle used rifle shows up in perfect condition it sends off red flags as to have been refinished,,some gunsmiths and dealers will smell a rifle to see if they can smell blueing or varnishes and will know pretty fast if it's been redone recently..so if a valuable gun ..your best to just clean it up and oil it down and leave the finishes alone or expect to loose the original value and cost of refinishing and be stuck with a pretty gun,,but if you expect to keep it then do whatever you want because you should be happy with what you own and not have to impress anyone or resale value won't matter!
