hi joe,
for home defence alot has to do with what you're comfortable with. as for stopping power 38 sp or greater is considered exceptable. personally i use a .41 mag 6 shot revolver, as in my oppinion if i've got to shoot more than 6 times i'll be looking for the shotgun for my back up. my wife keeps a 20 gauge browning auto with an 18" barrel, looks like a WW1 trench shotgun but with 5 #3 buckshot it'll stop anything coming into the yard. i've never subscribed to the high capacity pistol for home defence since if you need alot of rounds you either can't shoot or you're involved in a firefight where you'll need an assult weapon. this is just my oppinion but you need to be comfortable with what your shooting and dependability is required. JMHO hope this helps.
