hello ,,your colt 1911 was made in 1918 and these serial number ranges are often called the Black Army model because of the coarse finish that appeares almost black,,providing the finish isn't flaking your pistol is worth 1500 good-3500 excellent,,these prices can be acheived at a good auction or from a serious 1911 collector,, gunshop dealers might offer ya around 500 if the condition is good or better ,,you should have an eagle over a number proof just above the mag release on this model,,and the barrel should have a HP proof that should be visable thru the ejection port,,your holster if brown is about 75-100,,if it's dyed black it would be worth 25-40,,

I don't want to but I need to sell this gun.I t also has a story My grandfather was in the KKK in Chicago during the time of Al Capone. He and his frinds were having a beer in a bar in Cicero When they noticed 3 of Capones men come in.They called the Feds and the men were arested. One of the feds gave my grandfather this gun that was taken off of the bad guy.I also have my grandfathers KKK patch and sash that would go with the gun.I had this gun looked at in a gun store and was told it was almost in excellant shape. Do you know anyone in the dallas-Ft Worth area or auctions in this area where I could sell this?
And thanks for your help.

sorry ..i 'm not familular with the fort worth aera,,gunbrokers.com may be a site to check out for onlie gun auctions there a auction style onlie site and there are alot of people and collector who use it,,but read and understand the issues involved with selling guns online and follow rules and reg's for your state and the atf for transfers issues ..especially with handguns ..alot of dealers won't accept guns from private individuals but alot will ,,but include in your description about it comming from a private collections and this way dealers will know upfront thats your not a dealer ..otherwise you will have to sell it thru a local gunshop or ffl dealer and they will have to do the paperwork involved and ship it for you

,,the KKK part of your guns history may create some issues with people online if you go to sell it this way,,somethings are better left alone when it comes to racial issues ..if you know what i mean!,,the value will be to a colt 1911 collector ,,and thats your selling point you should do.. over the kkk history..but there are collectors that may be intrested in the history with the gun ,,but i don't think if i were selling online i'd make it a selling point to increase the value ..because you may get some ugly responces from some people ..and some sites may not even let you list it as such..because of the racial issues involved!i might say in the description that theres alot of intresting history on the pistol and leave it at that..and see what kinda responces you get..

,,the story with how your grandfather came to get it is intresting but without actual documentation on the event it's hard to proove and people can say anything but to get it documented is another thing ,,really cool history and seems a shame to get rid of something with the family history this pistol has but i completly understand that ya can't eat it.. and sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do!!gunsamerica may also be an avenue to pursue.. they have alot of high end guns there and there not bad with selling fees and i beleive that they only charge you if it sells,,but it's a fixed price site and the price you list it at is the price that it might sell for or someone may offer you lower but not very often more .. ,,you can check out there site and get all the info there ,,good luck with it ,,

You might want to give the guys at B&S Guns in Garland a call....they have a wealth of knowledge on guns and might be able to direct you towards a reputable auction site and/or agent.
