A little while ago, government agents carrying out lawful orders to seize a cache of unregistered militia weapons were involved in a fire fight in which nine armed militiamen were shot and killed, and eight more were wounded.

The agents then moved on to a second illegal arsenal, but were forced to retreat by more organized and better armed defenders. When the agents attempted to retreat to their headquarters, the militiamen ambushed the group, killing many of the agents. The death toll is very high, estimated at more than one hundred.

I suspect many who just read those two paragraphs are horrified and expect the criminal militia members to be brought to swift justice. But consider this: A 'little while' was actually a bit over 228 years. The government agents were British soldiers. The militiamen are better known as the Minutemen and the fighting took place in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. 'The Shot Heard 'Round The World' on June 19, 1775, began the American Revolution.

Today is the 4th of July, the 227th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I hope some of you will take a little time out from backyard cookouts, swimming parties, and fireworks displays (which I'll be enjoying, too) to remember that we regard the Minutemen as heroes because they stood up to a tyrannical government and laid their lives on the line for liberty.

Happy Independence Day Alan Esworthy

What's this. Revisionist history!

April 19, 1775. Not June. http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Depts/MilSci/BTSI/ abs_lex.html

And they were issued UNLAWFUL orders. '7. That the subjects which are Protestants may have arms for their defence suitable to their conditions and as allowed by law;'

Loved the setup and message, but the Declaration of Independence wasn't signed till Aug. 2 . . . The cookout, fireworks and the rest were especially meaningful this year!

#What's this. Revisionist history! # #April 19, 1775. Not June. # http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Depts/MilSci/BTSI/ abs_lex.html # April 19th makes has made me nervous since Waco. Waco was on that date as was the Oklahoma City bombing. Then came Columbine on the 20th and the fact that's its Hitler's birthday pretty much make me very alert that whole week now.
