So I've been reading here where lots of folks don't like the Mini 14. It's inexpensive but not very accurate. So what's a good target rifle? I'm looking for something in a .223 - 7.62 size.

Oh yeah, it needs to be California legal.

Thanks,

You might consider bolt action rifles. Remington 700 comes to mind. CZ also makes excellent bolt action rifles. www-cz-usa.com

We need more criteria. Semi-auto?

If it doesn't have to be a semi-auto, a Savage 10FP in .223 or .308 would be a good gun.

Of course you don't say what kind of 'target' shooting you'll be doing either.

How about some more information?

For semi-auto in 223, Mini-14 is the only thing available in California (except for the Fab-10 with a weird fixed magazine).

The Mini-14 can be accurized to about 1 MOA by people like Clark's Customs.

'Target Rifle' is a term like 'deer rifle', its kind of general. What kind of competition did you have in mind? You've got to know you can't shoot 'military' with a mini 14 and for just about anything else you want a bolt gun. They're kind of pricey, but a Remington 700 Series with barrel weight, stock, sights, and accessories selected for your event is probably the best way to go. Get a good used one, take decent care of it, and you'll get your investment back when you trade up. If you know what you want in set-up, you might take a look at the new Savages with that 'Accu Trigger' set up. For most of us, a good trigger is more important to our scoring than the 'bench accuracy' of the gun, (they all shoot better than we do offhand).

Also, if 1-2 MOA is acceptable, you can actually do your own accurizing work and save big $$$. Check out the Mini-14 accurizing forum at www.perfectunion.com (I'm about halfway through the process myself, and it's amazing the results you can achieve on your own)

You are incorrect ! What about the Browning BAR ? I am pretty sure it is available in .223 and I know you can get it in 308 and 30-06.
