My favorite carry/travel weapon has turned into a single shot. The slide stop engages whenever the slide travels to rear.I've switched magazines and ammo but still no good.Almost makes me miss my old Kimber 1911). Any help greatly

When a magazine empties it has a little area on it which pushes the slide stop up, locking the slide back. Because you tried other magazines, it's unlikely a magazine related problem. Did you disassemble the pistol or have any of the pins out of it? It sounds as if the slide stop spring has popped out of position, has broken, or has become deformed/weakened. The slide stop lever should spring down towards the frame after you push up on it. Recoil will make a slide stop, without a spring, jump up and lock the slide open. It's an easy and cheap (about $2.00 + shipping)if you need a new spring) problem to fix. Here's the schematic page: http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp? chrMasterModel=2440z23

There's a spring that keeps the slide stop down. It could be getting weak. I had this happen to me on a Glock 21. It's probably your thumb touching it while you're shooting. With a new spring this probably was never an issue.

Your thumb should never be on that lever except when you are swapping mags. Glock springs are good for many tens of thousands of rounds. The slide release mechanism on Glocks is not prone to failure, as far as I know. I've put extended ones on most of my Glocks, but only because of my short fingers, not any defect in the handguns.

You probably have a broken slide stop spring.

take off the slide, and try lifiting up the slide stop...if it doesnt snap back down, it is probably broken.

very common with this design

I vote for Charlie's answer - I witnessed this happen to a Glock 24 before, the longslide .40S&W version. The guy's slide stop spring was broken and/or missing. Check for that, replace if needed, and you should be good to go.

I think Danno is right on track. If you've disassembled the slide stop from the frame, you do have to be careful that you reinstall it so that the slide stop snaps down when you lift it up. If you haven't disassembled the slide stop from the frame, it could be a broken slide stop spring (although this is not one of the more commonly broken springs on the Glock). If so, be happy because this is a simple, inexpensive fix. For parts, see www.glockmeister.com.
