Being kind of new to double barrelled shotguns, I bought an inexpensive 20 gauge. Standard type with latch for break open of barrels.

Fired one shot through it on the right barrel; no problem. Action opened and empty casing came out.

Loaded 2 shells in and fired the right barrel, re-sighted, and fired the left barrel. Now I can't open the flipping thing up! The latch moves but something seems to have jammed in the action and is preventing the barrels from dropping open. Don't want to force it too much. Removing the front stock did not help.

Is this a weird problem, or has anyone encountered it? I'm taking the fool thing to the local gun-smith, but was curious if I bought a dog here......

Thanks -

That happened to me on an old side by side and the problem was a broke firing pin. I bounced it hard on the butt and it moved enough to open up. BE POSITIVE THE SHELLS INDEED FIRED!! I know you said it did but be sure.

good chance you got a dog, what loads were you using heavy field? How old is the gun? s/s or o/u? Did the action appear tight when you bought it? You may have a headspace problem from a out shot old double. Makes a good mantle gun.....

#something seems to have jammed in the action and is preventing the barrels #from dropping open.

The left firing pin may be stuck forward in the fired primer. IF YOU KNOW THAT BOTH BARRELS ARE NOT LOADED WITH LIVE SHELLS, you could try using a blunt ended rod down the barrel to tap against the firing pins, maybe allowing the gun to open. First smack the butt against a hard surface a few times - that might do the trick.

It could be one of the firing pins is stuck in the primer... I've run into this before with an over-length pin in a break action shotgun. You can try bumping the butt on the floor a few times to see if the pin retracts. If this is the problem the pin should be shortened and/or polished.
