What do you do when the power suddenly fails and you find yourself in the pitch dark with a feeling that not all is well?
Due to the recent surge of violent home invasions that include the invaders cutting the power and the phone lines before they invade, the answer to this question should be rethought - and looking out the window to see if the neighbours have lights or not, or going to check the mains might no longer be the smartest and most called for move.
Expert witness says
The instant the lights go out, TASK ONE is to get hold of a firearm. This will be done before looking out the window to see if the power outage is neighborhood-wide, or much more limited. Second, firearm, flashlight, and cell phone are taken to our “keep” area. Use of lights will be kept to a minimum. We keep a careful listening watch for what the dogs do. THEN, we’ll check to see if this is happenstance or evil design.
Taking into consideration that the invaders will have the element of surprise on their side, it is probably wise at least to keep your cell on you at all times, and to make sure that there is a flash light next to your fire arm.
Another precaution that can be taken is haveing emergency lights up (the kind that turn on the moment the power fails) so that the invaders will only have the cover of partial darkness, instead of the freedom to move in the cover of pitch black.

best thing about dogs ,,they can see and hear things you don’t always see or hear,,i have two and nobody.. and i mean nobody will come close to the house without them alerting me..best burgular alarm ever invented,,and without a shadow of a doubt definatly on duty 24-7 and not electrically powered!..but will bite just about as hard..lol..
bigcurt
I know people say that the best burglar alarms are the really small yappy little dogs, like hysterical chiwawas and Yorkshire Terriers… Yap yap yap - waking up the entire neighborhood…
thats right and my neighbors may not like it when they bark but they know somebodys around if there barking..but a flashlight and firearm and cell phone are also on the list of close at hand items needed for those moments when the dog alarms go off late at night,,best firearm for personal defence is a short barreled shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot or a short barreled revolver,,i personally don’t recommend a semi auto handgun because there is a chance of a malfunction during feeding ,,revolvers don’t usually jam and if you pull it out.. don’t be afraid to use it!!,,
i agree whole heartedly. personally i have a small led flashlight to help find the perp after the dogs let me know the location and a burst or two from a browning 20 that i’ve converted to a mini remington model 11 trenchgun. i live way out in the woods where a cellphone is useless. my wifes a "citygirl" and it took me many years to convience her that if there’s something outside and you scared, DONT TURN ON THE LIGHTS. and if you venture out, whome ever is out there has a very good target if you scanning the area with a high power flashlight. in the past few years in florida having dogs that bite has become an issue and many locals require liability insurance on "biting dogs" and certain breeds. My dogs are very good at sensing something out of the ordinary and their only job is to let me know "what and where". then i get to do mine. on a good night the police can be at my front door in 30 minutes, and as we all know "it only takes the police minutes to get there when seconds count.
yes indeed dogs are mans best friend.i live in the motor city now
and have two very large american bulldogs (100 lbs =)that i’ll kiss your ass if you can sneak by.once they have alerted me i use
a remington model 1100 with buck barrel thats by my bed for close
quaters work and if i have to start cutting the walls and floorboards my sa58 fn is in the closet. the only lights i need are coming from the business ends of my babys then the dogs can have whats left.
