Does anyone in here know of any websites or books that cover the specifics of making wooden pistol grips? I'm considering making some wrap around grips for my old Colt Woodsman. I'd think it's mainly a matter of patience, but there are always surprises in specialized areas. Marty

Go visit http://www.blindhogg.com/grips2.html

It is mainly geared toward 1911 grips but the basics are the same.

mine came with a set, which I didn't care for, and went back to the originals. It looked like the fellow that made them started with two blocks of walnut. Then, fitted them to the recess in the frame, and made sure they mated up. Then, drilled the hole for the brass through bolt he had. Drill one hole in one grip, using the frame hole for a guide to center/spot the drill. Then do the other one.

#From that point on it is a matter of a rasp, sharp chisel, and patience.

I did some slab grips for my Ruger Mk I. Same idea, but no fitting to recess. Use the opposite grip as a pattern for the holes. They were much easier.

Finish off with tung oil, or BLO. Your choice.

I've done some cherry grips for a replica Stevens tip-up. Cherry is very pretty, but chips easily. Walnut is easier to work, and easier to find. Local lumber yard had lengths at $1 per foot.
