I am getting started in Cowboy silhouette with a Wnchester 94 and would like to put better sights on it. What are your experiences with the various receiver and tang sights by Lyman, Williams, and Marble's?

Receiver sights are not allowed - see http://www.sassnet.com/pages/SHBv102.pdf

Tang sights are OK

I have an original Winchester 1892 with a 1/16 black front bead and open sights, and a tang sight. I also have a Marlin 1894CS with 1/16 gold front bead and open sights.

I find that I can get on the target much quicker using the open sights than using the tang sight.

Ahh, John, JS2RT wrote 'Cowboy Silhouette', not SASS Long Range Rifle. AFAIK, the Cowboy Lever Gun Silhouette is an NRA sanctioned event, and not related to CAS.

Sorry about that - I was not aware of the existence of 'Cowboy Lever Gun Silhouette' as a separate type of event. I ass/u/med that he was getting into SASS.

Right on. I have rifles with both peep and open sights and much prefer the latter. I'll admit, for snap shooting at close range, a peep with a big aperature is best, but for precision shooting the open sights seem to suit me better. The only exception is pure target sights where the aperature, globe front and bullseye target are all carefully matched. I once shot a falling block rifle in .45-70 with this kind of set up and was amazed at the precision possible. - CW
