I have one these pistols. the serial number is 55097. I called Colt and they indicated this serial number was made in 1907 which is the first year of manufacture for this model. The pistol is in pretty good shape. It works (tested by dry fire only) and I have cleaned the surface rust with gub cleaner and oiled it. I am trying to get an idea what a first edition model such as this might be worth

It sounds like you have the 1903 pocket pistol ,,does it have the 1897 pattent date?,,or later pattent date,,this pistol was made from 1903-1945 and current values would be 300 fair-500 vg range to a collector or at auction,,if it has the 1897 pattent then the values would be almost double the above prices ..dealers would proably offer you 150-250 for it again depending on condition..

Big Curt thanks for your reply
First to answer your questions
1. I am in Newport News Virginia
2. The patents listed on the gun are
aug 16,1884, jun6 1900, july 4, 1905 0r 6 I cannot tell for sure.
3. I did not say before but this has a 2 and 5/8 in barrel and 32 S&WL cartridges firt nicely

Again the serial number is 55097. I went to this website http://proofhouse.com/colt/index.html

and found this serial number listed in 3 places
1. new police 32 and target last year 1908 started at 49500 so it could be this but new police doesn't say pocket not likely particularly as last patent is later than first year of production.
2. pocket positive 1910 starts at 48200 but doesn;t have word police or 32 caliber
3. pocket positive 32 and target starts at serial number 49500 misiing word police which is stamped on gun.

So I called colt Manufacturing and spoke to customer and read the exact words on gun
Pocket Positive 32 Police Ctg and serial number 55097 to them and they said it was made in 1907.

hello again,,sorry i thought it was a semi auto model,,and i think your saying it's a wheel gun ,,that explains the short barrel,,now i think i'm getting on the right page ..lol brain dead sometimes and i've answered alot of questions,,lol,,well you have some good points on man. dates i see what you mean about some not being within the ranges,,the proof house site is an excellent site and seems to be pretty acurate ,,so colt says it was made in 1907 and from looking the police positive 32 &target is the only serial number range that fits ,,and colt should know from the serial number and the markings,, ,,the barrel dates are exact for a pocket positive ,,right up to and including the july4 1905 and these dates are word for word outa the blue book of gun values listed for the first issue pocket positive ,,but again the serial number for the pocket positve are not right UNLESS colt got your description mixed up because of the 32 colt new police cartridge line which may be the reason they said 1907,,from the serial number that would be a police positive ,,but if they misstook your description and looked up the police positive that could be the answer to the problem and the 1907 date for the serial#,,i beleive your pistol is a "pocket positive" that was made in 1913 ,,if you check.. everything works out right ,,the patent dates are right and the pistol was made untill 1927 and serial number range would work for a pocket positive first issue revolver ,,values i have would be 275 good -600exc,,i think that we have solved the mystery..lol..lol,,and sorry i gave you the wrong info earlier,,i just didn't click on it mabey being a revolver,, and my first thoughts were a colt pocket auto..

The words Colt pocket Positive 32 Police CTG
