I have a Colt Model 1911 with a serial number in the 82000 range. It appears to have an "N" prefix. It has the original barrel and is about 80%. Any idea what it might be worth and any info on the N prefix?

hello ,,i can't find any refrence to an n prefix for a military 1911 pistol,,what does the slide say exactly,,is it marked us property? it may be a comercial model made after ww2,,an 82000 serial on a military issued pistol would be a springfield lot number made in 1914 but should be marked with the branch of service and us property,,if it's a military model

It is not marked with any US markings. It is a 1911 and not a 1911A1. Slide markings are:
Patented Apr. 20 1897 over: Sept. 9 1902. Dec 19 1905. Feb 14 1911. To the right is: Colt's PT.F.A. MFG. CO. over: Hartford CT. U.S.A.. Above the magazine release is what looks like a W overlaying a G in a circle. It has the long spur and uses a different firing pin than that of the A1.

hello again,,well i looked at my refrence books,,and still don't know about the N prefix,,most 1911 comercial models have numbered slides with a C prefix ,,some were made with unumbered slides and the serial number you have could put it in that range but serial number should have the c prefix,,either of the early models listed above are in the 1500-2000 range in the condition you say yours is in,,one of our other moderators refrenced a link to a 1911 colt collectors site that may help out with the N prefix ,,thanks to kim for this link it may be helpful http://www.sightm1911.com ,,hope it helps with your markings

I just read your question regarding the serial number on a colt 1911 you have. The N preceeding the serial number would have been followed by an O with some variations. The fact that the United States Property markings are missing may indicate the pistol has been altered ( markings filed off and re-blued). This is a good site to help you determine what you have http://www.coolgunsite.com/pistols/1911infopage.htm
If the pistol has been altered it has little collectors value $500-$800, so hopefully it's a good shooter, enjoy it that way. Hope this helps.
