I'm holding a Winchester 94 for a widow friend of mine. I'm trying to determine the value of it and what is the best way to sell it with a minimum or red tape(read none. Serial # 2361xxx.

I've also got 2 hand guns that were given to me by her husband before he died. I would like the same information if possible.

#1. S & W Model 10 2" barrel-never fired.Serial #8D64xxx.

#2 Colt 1911A1 reblued and in fine looking condition (to me) with some Flitz grips
and competition sights added to it. Serial
#420xxx.

Any help would be appreciated.

hello..her model 94 was made in 1957 and value would be in the 400-550 price range..the model 10 is in the 200-350 range..and the 1911a1 appeares to have been made in 1918 by colt judging from the serial number,,the refinishing hurts it some and it's kinda hard to tell how much without looking at it,,most of the time during the refinish the markings get a worn look called "wash out"and this will deduct from the value to a collector..but it's still a desireable colt and without seeing it as long as it's presentable and in working order and the blueing looks good and not spotty..i would still venture to say it's value would proably be in the 750-1200 range,,but if it was still in the original as issued condition it would start at 1000 and then could climb to mabey 2000 or more
as for selling them you have a couple options ,,you could sell them in a local newspaper or free ad paper and sell them to a private individual of your descretion but i would recommend using a dealer on the handguns for transfer just to be safe..usually the buyer will pay the transfer fee if he wants them,,or you could talk with a reputable dealer in your aera and see if he will take them on a consignment..or you could try an online auction site like gunbrokers.com,,auction arms,,or guns america,,sign up and regester for one of these then list them yourself and specify these are from a private collection and that you will only ship to a ffl dealer for transfer,,this way there transfered properly before the buyer takes possesion of the firearm,,another option would be to check out local gunshows and sell them there or to a local dealer but be aware that the prices quoted are private sale prices and a dealer will look at the books for priceing and won't usually pay more than 1/2 of book value at the different condition grades .. lets use the model 10 in good condition and the book says it's worth 200 a dealer has to concider what he can make on the price your asking ..if he think he can sell it for 300 mabey he will go 200,,if not he may ask if you'll take 150 for it..don't take the first offer you get shop around ..start higher mabey 250 you can always come down and he may offer what you really wanted for it to start with and he may buy it for 250..it's a game like selling a new car you can always drop your price to make the sale but don't let a dealer treat you like a moreon ..do some homework and check the auction sites i mentioned to see what other people are asking for the item your selling and you'll have more of an edge for bargaining ,,most people sell guns they don't even know what they have and give them away because they don't bother to research them to see what there actually worth,,oh another thing the model 94 and the 1911 proably never were regestered because of the build dates the md 10 could go either way depending when it was bought,,because of that fact don't be afraid to get them regestered.it's always better to be safe than sorry..it's a simple procedure where you take them to a shop in your aera fill out the paperwork pay for the instacheck "background check" and your done..the dealer is required to keep the 4473 form which is just information on the buyer and the weapon and these papers stay in his records..the check he does is to be sure the buyer can legally own the gun and has no criminal convictions that would prevent him from owning a firearm,,it's not to see if the gun has been regestered before..or who owned it before..it's red tape but covers the seller selling to someone he doesn't know..and well worth the time spent..hope i've helped ya some..
