I hunted the whole 2000 season of ducks and pheasants with an old Browning A5 with steel shot, and the choke is still so tight, it shoots like a rifle.

I fired 3 shots very fast of steel shot and a small piece of the butt stock fell out from recoil. Other than that, that shotgun still has a full choke, which means it patterns steel shot like a rifle.

In the state of Washington has only a few private hunting areas where steel shot is not required.

You're correct. Don't use steel shot in any gun that is not specifically designed for it. Use bismuth shot instead and enjoy your hunt.
