Your 16 gauge is an early version (1923-1940) and is probably chambered for 2 1/2" shells which no onw currently produces anymore. It is possible that the gun was modified for the more common 2 3/4" shells, but it would take an experienced eye to tell. According to the "Blue Book", the early 2 1/2 in versions are less desireable. Value would depend on the condition, but ballpark figures range from $200 to $750.00.

Where can I find some information on reading the markings on my Browning A5 Sixteen gauge. It has been passed down through my family from my Great Grandfather, & know it's from somewhere around the late 40's or early 50's. was just wondering if there was some website that told how to read them.

proofhouse.com shows this serial number as the first year of A-5 manufacture, 1924. I have 1928, which shoots modern rounds just fine, and no adaptation was ever made to it.
