Hi guys. I know that the bill is written so as to sunset in late 2004, but what is the general consensus on if it will expire? Over at www.awbansunset.com they seem to be quite optimistic that it will not be renewed, but they're a little biased. Basically, does it right now look likely or unlikely that the ban will be renewed? (for the most part I'm not interested in any specific weapons, but I'd like to be able to get hi cap magazines for plinking, and frankly I don't think the law had any business being passed in the first place)

I am certain the anti-gun lobby will do everything in its power to get the ban renewed sans-sunset clause. They will probably add to the list of banned items. Bush will sign it if it hits his desk.

It is very difficult to get a right back that you have lost. Now is the time to be calling your congress critter and senate critters to pressure them into _not_ voting for any kind of extension whatsoever.

This is the wrong time to be complacent.

IIRC, Pres. Bush has all but guaranteed that the ban will continue. He was asked about this within the past two months.

It depends on whether the prez thinks the soccer mom vote is worth the hit he'll take from us and whether the Dem's candidate has a prayer of a chance. If it's a close race, you may see all sorts of stuff coming out of Congress. He's already indicated he'd sign the extension bill if it showed up on his desk. It's up to us to see that it doesn't show. With all the running dog Democrat twits running for President, it's hard to say who's going to be a threat.

With a Republican majority in both House and Senate and a *few* moderate Democrats that are pro-RKBA it's unlikely that a new AW ban will make it out of committee. And much less likely an enhanced one would pass. And don't forget that even if one passed both houses, unless they had identical phrazing, they'd have to go to conference to be reconciled.

When both the POTUS and his AG were asked if they supported the AW ban they said, in effect, that since it is *Law* they support the present ban. (it sunsets) When asked if they would support a *new* AW ban, they said *no*.

# It is this kind of idealism voting (splitting the vote) that got Bill Clinton # elected in 1992 (Bush Sr. and Ross Perot combined got almost 60 percent of # the vote.)

Yep, but as long as it continues to be a choice between the lesser of evils, evil will continue to rule. Only by asserting ourselves and having them lose our support will they really and truly come to understand that if they wish to be in power it's not enough to just be less evil than the other party but actually work FOR our interests and welfare. Only in that way can we halt the decay. Because I can tell you in 1992 the Republicans got a wake up call, the Democrats got another one a few years later when it cost them 20 Congressional seats to enact the Assault weapons bill. We need to continue to show them that screwing us over loses them popular support, they will either get the message or the libertarian party will eventually gain enough support from people to gain power in it's own right. After all, the Republicans and Democrats didn't start out as full blown powers either. They supplanted other parties that were seen to no longer be interested in the welfare of the citizens, and IMO it's time they be reminded of that fact.

I, personally, vote for the best candidate, if that splits the vote, so be it. I at least have the conviction of telling myself I did what I could to support the BEST person, not just the lesser of evils. It is the thought that you have to support the Republicans lest the Democrats win and visa versa that ultimately lets BOTH of these parties remain in power. You can continue to chose between Rep and Demo but if you're screwed over by either, you have only yourself to blame for keeping them in power.
