hello,,i've read many post also on the heat treat issues with home built ak's and it would be very hard to tell if it was properly done or not unless you know the person who built the rifle ..some people say that at minium you have to treat the holes for the trigger group and the rails on the receiver..some people say to treat the entire receiver but again how would ya know if the rifle you bought has been properly heat treated? i guess if your in doubt then i'd suggest selling it and buying one you know was built properly,,i've owned 4 different com block semi auto variations of ak style rifles but haven't owned a homemade rifle so really can't say how well they work ,,the ones i have owned have had some feed issues from time to time but the issues seem to be due to the mags used..and mostly when loaded to capacity..so i usually just load 28 in a 30 rd mag and that usually solved the problem,,but the heat treating issue goes on and on..and i know the feeling owning something that people are saying can be dangerous,,i owned a fr-8 spanish mauser rifle that for every post you read about how good they shoot you will find a post saying they weren't ment to fire factory loads..the steel is too soft,,then theres the heat treat issues with the early springfeild receivers and i know guys who shoot them regularly and have never had any issues with them,,but again the issues exist with SOME OF THEM,,so it will always be in the back of your mind wether yours is gonna be one of the ones it happens to!it makes you real uncomfortable everytime you shoot your rifle and although it may never happen.. if your in doubt then i'd move it on down the road and look for one of the com block factory rifles,,they are going up in prices but if you look around you can still find them and with the price of parts kits these days it's getting expencive to even build your own by time you find a good kit then you buy the barrel and receiver,,there are many good forums out there and the heat treating issue is always on them somewhere ..so if ya read more on it it's proably gonna be a 50/50 verdict but is yours the 50+ or 50- rifle??is it really worth wandering if yours will hold together or if down the road you have issues that may make your rifle useless,,then all you have is a pile of metal parts ,, ak47.net is a good site for info and there are lots of good sites devoted to ak style rifles and i'd read all i can if you have doubts!!
