This evening, I shot the best offhand group recently with my AR-15. At 100 yards on an SR-1 center, I fired 20 rounds of Winchester Q3131A 55gr FMJ: 1 in the 8, 6 in the 9, and 13 in the 10, with 1X. Discarding the 2 worst shots, 18 would touch a 3'x3.5' box. This box would be centered 1/2' high, but the median is only 1/4' high. Sight clicks are 1/2 MOA, so it is questionable whether a click down is desirable, since I tend to go by the median. Windage is within 1/4' of proper, so leave it as is.
What differentiated this group from other ones lately? I was shooting in the early evening this time, but usually around noon the others. My mind was focussed on shooting, and not wandering. There was no wind and no rain. I only fired 20 rounds this time, vs my usual 30, so there were less opportunities to throw a few nasties to mess everything up. I also noticed after a few shots that my knees were not locked fully extended, and my legs were wobbling. I made a very conscious effort to keep my knees locked fully extended after that. I think the knees must be it, since that is the only really unique thing about today. The rest was just a series of necessary prerequisites for reasonable shooting, but hardly a guarantee of it.
