hello ,,sorry to say that with a serial number ground off the gun isn't worth much and is concidered by dealers as an illeagle firearm ..if you would be questioned at a range by a law enforcement officer the pistol would most proably be concidered illeagle to own and would proably be confiscated,,and concidered a stolen handgun ,,it's a shame but thats the way the law looks at firearms with serial numbers that have been removed ,,it still would have proably good useable parts that would have value and you mabey could get 300-500 from the slide barrel and frame parts ,,but the part with the serial number ground off would proably have to be destroyed and as a whole firearm might be a problem if you ever want to sell it ,,thats why i said earlier to keep it in your family..on the upside there are ways of restoring the serial if it wasn't ground too far down,,but thats something you would have to explore thru a dealer or professional restorer,,but procede with caution here.. since you didn't know the person who actually used the pistol and don't know why he ground the numbers off you might be opening a can of worms you don't want to open! thats a shame and it proably was a valuable pistol worth proably 1000's of dollars untill it was destroyed,,another option might be to buy another frame and have your parts assembled onto it ,,that would be the most practical thing to look at if your looking to resell itand get a good value for it ,,but i couldn't tell you what you might pay for an original frame that woould be matching to the rest of the parts,,you could also proably find an aftermarket frame but the value would conciderably less than an original 1911,,so those are your options as i see them..
