I am new to hunting but I recently inhereted a Remington 760 gamemaster 30 06 pump action with a 4 round magazine. What type of ammo should I be buying for this rifle that was manufactured in the 60's. I see a lot of 30 06 rounds manufactured by remington and winchester but there are several different grains as well as initials that I do not understand. I will be hunting deer with this rifle.

Alot of it has to do with where you're going to be hunting and what size deer you'll be targeting. Mule deer out west you going to want a larger grain bullet than say white tails in the south east. Personally I like Hornady ammo and as for the 760 it'll handle any ammo you want to put thru it as long as there has never been any damage done to it. The 30-06 round is in many peoples oppinion one of the best allround cartrages there are for hunting anything on the north american continent. You can shoot coyotes with the 110 gr and with the same gun shoot elk with the 200 gr bullets. great gun and chambering...IMHO

Let me know what animal you're hunting and where and I can be of more help.

Thanks for the response. I will be hunting in south texas for deer, mostly on deer leases. I imagine it is white tail and that they are on the larger side. I will look into Hornaday rounds and get a higher grain, but what about all of the initials like sp. What should I look for when I buy rounds.

The initials are very much standardized for the ammo guru's with a few exeptions. SP = soft point, HP = hollow point, FMJ full metal jacket,, then you have the exeptions such as SST by barnes which is their super shock solid, and many others. For south texas white tails any 165 sp will do the job. Pick up a few differant wieghts and brands and hit the range and see what your gun shoots the best. Differant rifles like differant loads. Rule of thumb being if you can hit a tennis ball at 100 yrds you can kill a whitetail at 300 yrds...JMHO
