At 53, I continually get mail from AARP (formerly American Association of Retired Persons) soliciting my membership. I had heard their organization was anti-handgun, so I emailed enquiring about such a position. Following is the

# The prevalence of random violence featuring handguns in some # neighborhoods has resulted in numbers of older people becoming virtual # prisoners in their homes. Increasingly, families are suffering the loss # of children and grandchildren who are the victims of violent crimes and # senseless shootings. While registration requirements do not eliminate # criminal or psychotic misuse of handguns, such requirements reduce the # availability of guns, just as laws do not eliminate but do reduce the # availability of illegal narcotics. Reduced availability to inappropriate # users means lives saved.
So AARP believes that drugs and guns are LESS available on the criminal street because of prohibition?
Must be senility.
No wonder they think that honest prisoners in their own homes should be kept

# We do continue to support careful measures to restrict the # availability of handguns to certain populations.
Read: Unwashed masses.
# However, respected research continues to indicate that the use of # firearms in assaults and robbery-particularly handguns-is directly # linked to the high death rate from interpersonal violence in the USA # compared with other industrialized countries.
No s**t Sherlock, but how does lawful ownership effect this?
# While registration requirements do not eliminate # criminal or psychotic misuse of handguns, such requirements reduce the # availability of guns...
Like in England?

Interesting. So gun owners in the AARP could alter the policy regarding anti-gun legislation. They just have to get more involved in the organization and convince the members that a gun is their best defense against criminals and that their medicare benifits would be useless if some criminal brained them with a baseball bat.

Notice they are not specific about which ways to plug these so-called 'gaps' because they either do not have the solution, or they do not want to tell you what their solution is. Tell them to piss off. They are emotion based, shallow, misinformed, idiots. Ask them what specific gaps exist, and what the formula should be to plug them. Make them think, which is impossible for idiots.

Registration reduces availability? Where has this happened, again ask them to cite specific examples? NY has had it for 70 years. A real success in reducing so-called 'availability' Registration does not reduce 'availability' it is a revenue generator and a confiscation tool. I guess registering cars has reduced their 'availability' to criminals who use cars in the commission of crimes? Bullshit!

The AARP is very anti-gun. They are just giving you the soft sell here. One reason I would never join.
