I have an 1895 Winchester serial number 67449. It belonged to my Grandfather. Looks good and shoots well. What can you tell me about this gun? Is it a shooter? Thanks!

hello,,the 1895 winchester is very collectable and also said to be very good shooters,,i beleive teddy roosevelt hunted with an 1895 on some of his hunting trips ,,in todays market i've seen original 1895 sell in the 800 and up range depending how nice they are possibly alot more to the right collector ,,so when you ask if it's a shooter ? i'd say as long as it safe to shoot it is..but there is collectors intrest also..

Thanks for your quick response, BigCurt. The gun has been drilled for a scope, but otherwise is in terrific condition.

I've noticed that occasionaly a dimple will occur on the primer after being put in the magazine and ejected. What would cause this, and is it dangerous?

hello again ,,well the scope mount won't add to the value ..it will subtract value to collectors ,,i'd mabey still say you should be able to see around the 600-800 range if the mount was done properly ,,if you sell it i'd get some plug screws and remove the mount and plug the holes it will look better than just selling it with open holes or a scope mount on it,,as for the dimple on the primers ,,do you mean a ring or crater around the spot where the fireing pin hit the primer ?if so that could be a sign of a hot load or mabey an issue with headspace or possibly just the ammo being used ,,some old ammo sometimes may be hotter than newer stuff or visa- versa,,if it's happens all the time with different ammo it could be saying something but if it's just occasionaly it shouldn't be an issue of great concerns ,,but if in doubt have a gunsmith check it out ,,just to be safe ..

Thanks again, BigCurt. I'm taking the gun elk hunting in a few days. It's still my Grandpa's gun, even though he's dead and gone. I just get to keep it for him... We'll probably never sell.

I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it with so many people.
