how do I tell the difference between the 2, i have a 1898 30-40 serial # 254754 in good to excellent condition

your serial number indicates thatyou have a rifle model krag ,,the rifle came with a 30" barrel ,,the carbine had a 22 " barrel ,,and your serial number is higher than those of the carbine range for a 1898 model,,if it was dated 1899 it could fall into a carbine range ,,the stock should go within 6" of the end of the barrel,,carbines would be half stocked ,,

..many rifles were converted to sporters in the last 50 or so years and sometimes they look like a carbine but unless the serial numbers are within the range of the carbine numbers it's been cut down
