I have a krag 1894 #15493 any way to find out the production date and how long the barrel should be. It has a 20 inch barrel, with dovetail front and rear sights cut into the barrel which look original.

hello ,,it sounds like you have a 2nd type ..model 1892 krag,,this information is based on the date stamped on your rifle and the serial number,,unfortunatly the barrel should be 30" long and the rear site was definatly a military adjustable style site not a dovetailed site,,

,, it sounds liek yours was cut down to sporter lenght as is common with many krags ,,these were a very popular hunting rifle for many many years and still have a following in the feild..and excellent deer cartridge very capable of downing just about any north american game with proper shot placement..unfortunatly only a few companys load for it these days but most owners handload with good success,,

,,your rifle as it is would fall into the value as a hunting rifle catagory more than a collectors item and i'd say if nicely done should value around 250-350,,if it was still original with the correct barrel and wood it may bring in the 1000+ range and would proably go higher at a good military auction,,but back when the krags were more popular the long barrel wasn't too popular in the feild..so like i said alot of these were sporterized ..
