is there any cheaper ammo available for 30-06 or maybe another round that you could use in place of 30-06

Check gunshows and look at Shotgun News magazine.

Never fire any ammunition for which the weapon has not been chambered. To do so will potentially put your life and those of your fellow shooters at risk. Perhaps you should consider taking a basic firearms safety course. Your local gun shop or range should be able to assist you in that regard.

http://www.odcmp.com/ Get an M1 and/or an '03/'03A3 to shoot it with.

Maybe MiWall http://www.miwallcorp.com/ Last gun show, I bought 400 rounds of, IIRC, Talon reman M2 for $109, I think it was.

# If you want to shoot centerfire for cheap, buy a .223 rifle, that's the # lowest going cost for surplus ammo.

You sure? 8mm and 7.62X39 have been cheaper every time I've looked. And 7.62X54 is flooding in at cheap prices too.

An 8mm Turk mauser will set you back $40. Turk ammo in bandoleers is about $4 for 70 rounds. An SKS can be had for ~$150 in a lot of areas, and 1000 rounds of ammo is $80 or $90. You can get really accurate with a Mosin-Nagant and ammo for right around $.10 per round. Or get a Hakim and have some Garand-like shooting for cheaper than the Garand!

What is cheap? What do you want it for? Hunting, targets, a day at the range with an old service rifle? Targets and fun, the other replies have you covered. Also, PMC and Winchester have M2 ball equivalent ammo for around $8-9/20. That is not cheap, but it is cheaper than $20/20 for premium hunting ammo.

The best price I've found for 30-06 is CMP ammo sales. Only problem is that you can only buy 4K rounds per year. This is, of course, ideal ammo for your Garand rifle. Which 30-06 are you shooting? If it's a modern bolt action, and you are looking for cheap plinking ammo, try some of the 30-06 loads from Wolf available at the usual online ammo dealers. Don't shoot this stuff in your Garand, as it apparently is rather more powerful than M2 Ball. Heard a couple reports of Garands being damaged by shooting it.
