1949 is the first year of production for the 336SC or Sporting Carbine. Same as a 336A except the SC has a 20" barrel while the 336A had a 24". Here is what the 1949 Catalog listed for the SC:

"The Marlin Model 336 Sporting Carbine is a 6-shot lever action carbine with a 2/3 magazine. This model has all the fine features of the 336 Carbine. It is equipped with new "Huntsman" non-glare framp front sight with bead and a quick detachable hood. 20" round-tapered barrel of special smokeless steel. Overall length 38"; weight about 6 1/4 pounds."

The rifle has Ballard rifling instead of microgroove, and originally sold for $61.45 in 1949.
