I am thinking about a .17 HMR in the future, and have settled on a Savage 93R17-FVSS or a Marlin Model 17VS.

Does anyone have a preference for one over the other? I've looked at the Marlin in a local shop (*wow*) but haven't had a chance to check out the Savage.

The extractor on my 93R17-FVSS Savage leaves the odd fired shell in the chamber. I haven't fired fifty rounds through it yet. It likely needs a new extractor or proper fitting of the existing one. I have a 2.5 to 10x mil dot scope on it and am getting 1.25 inch groups with it at 100 metres. Get the Marlin. You won't be sorry.

What do you intend to do with it? If it is purely for hunting and pest control, you might be better off with a .22Mag.

???Huh??? I can hear it now.

Remington makes a .22mag V-Max. It's identical to the .17HMR, just a larger version in a non-necked down case.

velocity as well and 500fps for half the weight isn;t a good tradeoff in practice or on paper.

Pros: ..22 Mag - easy to get plinking ammo in dozens of types. Less expensive firearm and no custom cleaning supplies required.

Just as expensive for the Remington Premier as the V-Max. More choices in guns. More KE. Effective out to another 25-50yds compared to the .17HMR. Just as explosive and won't richochet.

Considering that you have one choice for ammo in .17HMR, using a less expensive .22Mag rifle withonly one round isn't any different.

I've had excellent service with the two 17 rifles I have, a Remington 597, and the Savage 93. At 100 yards, I get 1/2' groups routinely from both of them, and sometimes even smaller groups.

I stuck a Volquartsen target trigger in the Remington, and a Rifle Basix trigger in the Savage, and have not had any trouble out of either. Groups got smaller when they were installed.

I had the chance to buy either the Marlin or the Savage at the same time, and ended up getting the Savage because of the clip. Even though it's not a flush mount clip, it protrudes less than 1/2' below the stock, while the Marlin's sticks noticeably farther out of the stock. Also, the Savage I have is a bull barrell, and does not heat up as quickly as the other 'regular' barrels.

I have some friends who have the Marlin, and have been just as satisfied with their purchase as I have. Neither one is a bad choice, just enjoy shooting!!

Jason,

I have 4 Savage rifles. All are fine weapons. Out of the box they are dead on and the quality superb. The price is very fare. With all that said. Last Fall I ordered the Savage 17. Waited 4 months till it came in and when it did it was miss firing. They had to send it back to Savage. Waited another 6 weeks and put a 3X9X50 scope on it. Did not like the scope. Put a 6X24X50 scope on it. Well at lease now I could see the holes in the paper at 100 yards. The 17 will shoot very accurate out to 200 yards. So invest in a good quality scope. Getting back to the Savage rifle. I never did like how the action and the clip feed into the rifle and after a few months of shooting it I sold it. My advise spend a little extra money and get the Marlin. My buddy has on and its very nice compared to the one I had. I am very disappointed with Savage making such a cheap rifle. They are a fine company and that product does not deserve the Savage Arms name on it.

If you truly want a fine 17 HMR, purchase an Anschutz 1517. I bought one a few months ago, paired it with a Leupold 4.5x14x50. I consistently get 1/4 MOA at 100 yards with a four shot group...

That is one great rifle!

Just my 2 cents..

I was just told about this rifle from a shooting buddy of mine yesterday. Out of curiosity, what is a typical street price?

Street price is approximately $649 in South Texas. More expensive than others but well worth it in shooting enjoyment!
